Lightning Myths

Contrary to popular belief, metal objects (pack frames, ice axes, climbing hardware) on the ground do not attract a lightning strike or ground current. The lightning has had to pass through tens of thousands of feet (thousands of meters) of air before it reaches the ground and is not going to be suddenly “pulled” in by the small amount of metal on your body or in your pack. There are usually much better objects for an upward leader. That said, don’t stand right next to a huge, tall metal object like a firetower that is going to be a source for a an upward leader. However, metal in contact with the body can provide a path of least resistance for ground currents. It is best to set metal objects like pack frames and ice axes away from your body, to create a more attractive path past you rather than through you.
